Book Summary
Peter’s Uncle, Victor, comes home suddenly and entrusts Peter with a dangerous mission. He and his schoolmates have to save Norway’s gold before the Germans find it!
They also build airway shelters, and Peter gets elected team captain. One night, his father takes him to a cave where the gold is stored and tells him to memorize the route so he can show the other kids. They take the gold down the mountain in sleds to Uncle Victor’s boat, but for safety, they bury the gold under snowmen.
By this time, the Germans arrived, and one army officer turned his troop of soldiers away, so he wouldn’t spoil the kids’ sledding.
The Germans say all the children have to go back to school. But then they won’t be able to carry the gold! What can they do?
The doctor decides to make an epidemic. It attacks only the youngest children, and the German soldiers freak out and close the school. Instead, they issue a curfew that no one can go out after sunset.
The sled riding and bringing gold continue. Peter and Louisa are caught building snowmen above the gold. There was something that the captain didn’t like about her snowman, and he started to kick it over. That’s when Peter let loose a snowball, and it hit the captain’s ear!
Peter tried to escape, but they caught him and locked him up. He wonders, “Will I ever be free again?”
Josie’s Thoughts on Snow Treasure
I give Snow Treasure four stars.
This book is a historical fiction classic full of adventure, danger, and bravery.
I like this book because the characters are child heroes and make fatal decisions that could result in life or death.
It is a good book for most kids ages 9 and up.
