I love the written word. I have a hard time writing and comprehending written word without editing it. I naturally want to improve how sentences are written. Brevity is not my strength. I am a word nerd.
If you’ve ever been called “The Grammar Police” or were appalled to find typos in professionally published books, you understand.
I am also a money nerd. I cannot wait to attend FinCon2018–“where money nerds unite”–for the first time. I am always looking for ways to work smarter with my money. To say I’m frugal is putting it lightly. I will invest in things that are important to my core values and make my life easier. But everything else? Give me the best deal and cashback too!
Since creating my own business online, I have been happier than ever in the work department because I am finally finding ways to combine these gifts.
Read my example of how I blend these two interests of mine over at a huge self-publishing website, The Book Designer, where I teach aspiring and successful authors how they can get amazing editing for less money.
“The Book Designer is the most authoritative source online for information on how to independently publish and promote books. It is the highest-traffic blog in the category, with an average traffic volume exceeding 5,000 visitors a day, over 131,000 visitors in the past 30 days, and with a Twitter count of over 40,000 followers. The blog is regularly named to top sites lists, including the Top 100 Sites for Writers by Writers Digest, who also named Joel as one of the 10 people to follow in the publishing industry.
Check it out and see if it sparks an idea for how you can combine your gifts to create work you love too.
That’s how you let your light shine in the world. No one has the gifts that you do. And when you start using them every day to help others, the money will naturally follow.
And for all you who dream of publishing a book someday, use these tips when it’s time to hire an editor. You can hire a pro word nerd without going broke.
Cheers to your success and using your common cents!

Pregnant And Need Money Fast With Little Effort
It’s crunch time. You’re pregnant and need money fast because baby is on the way and there are one hundred things yet to buy. You need cash and you need it fast. Here’s how to make money while pregnant without much effort:
1. Make Money Taking Surveys
While taking surveys will not replace a full-time income, you can make easy extra money. Plus, these are things you can do even if you’re pregnant, on bedrest, or just killing time in the waiting room for your 98 appointments. But are there legitimate survey companies? You bet! There are six listed below.
Hot Tip: Create an email address just for taking surveys or create a filter so all messages from survey companies go to a specific folder. That way you can check that spot once or twice per day when you’re ready for survey activities without filling your main inbox with survey offers.
Legitimate Online Survey Companies:
Pinecone Research is a trusted leader in the survey panel industry. This site pays you $3 for every survey you take and you only need a $3 balance to get paid. There is a specific app for Pinecone Research too, so you can take surveys while you’re killing time in the waiting room for all your doctor appointments.
Pinecone is also great because you can get paid in your PayPal account, check, or gift cards and it seems much faster than other survey sites. Tap here to sign up and see if you qualify.
Harris Poll Online
Harris Poll Online is a place where you can make a little extra money by sharing your opinion. The surveys typically take 15-20 minutes or less.
You accumulate points and cash them in for gift cards. Tap here to create a free account with Harris Poll Online.
InboxDollars is another survey company that gives you a $5 bonus just for signing up.
Then you can earn more cash a little at a time by:
- watching TV and movies
- answering questions
- playing games
- using the InboxDollars search engine
- entering into sweepstakes
- reading emails
You can withdraw money once you reach $30. A cool thing with InboxDollars is even if you get disqualified for a survey, you win a spin on Billy’s Spin and Win wheel to at least earn something for your time. The easiest way to make money through InboxDollars is the InboxDollars app. Get the InboxDollars app for Android or app for iOS.
Tap here to claim your free $5 reward from InboxDollars.
Swagbucks is another site where you can get paid up to $35 per survey. I love cashing in my points for fun money to spend on Amazon. (Diapers and wipes on Amazon Prime Subscribe and Save is a life saver as a mom!)
You can also rack up points by:
- watching videos
- playing games
- using the Swagbucks search engine for your internet browsing
- adding the Swagbucks button to your internet browser
Bonus: You get a $10 Bonus after your first eligible purchase (similar to Ebates and Mr. Rebates).
Tap Here To Start Earning with Swagbucks.
Survey Junkie is another survey site to make money while pregnant. Survey Junkie is known for offering high points for their surveys and a good user experience on their site. They are also generous with points by giving you a few points even if you get disqualified from a survey (which not every site does). Once you reach $10, you can cash out your points for money.

2. Use Rebates & Cashback Apps
You might as well make sure you’re getting as much cash back you can on your purchases by using these tools. You’ll get rebates on groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries, clothes, travel, wholesale memberships, pet supplies, and alcoholic beverages. There’s a way to get cash back on just about any purchase using these:
- EBATES – Get big fat checks in the mail or PayPal every 3 months simply for clicking a button before you make online purchases. Thousands of stores offer $1-40% cashback for things you’re already buying. Seriously, you’ll wish you had started using it years ago. Grab Your Free $10 Bonus Now!
- Ibotta – Get easy money back for things you buy anyway–milk, bread, crackers, toilet paper, baby wipes, formula. Take pictures of your receipts and get real money via PayPal, Venmo, or gift cards. Ibotta will also give you $10 Welcome Bonus just for signing up. Get Your Friend Referral Code for Your Welcome Bonus Here!
- Swagbucks – Sometimes you can get a higher % back on your purchases if you go through Swagbucks instead of EBATES. If you sign up for Swagbucks you can compare the cashback offers and see which will save you more money. Either way, it’s a super easy way to put more money in your pocket
3. Sell Anything You Don’t Need or Love
If you’re pregnant and need money super fast, sell anything you don’t need or love. You would be surprised what people will pay for. Your clothes. Your purses. Holiday decorations. Your plasma. I made over $200 just last month selling stuff on Facebook that I almost just donated.
In addition to Facebook Marketplace and local buy & sell groups, you can make money while pregnant selling stuff on:

4. Virtual Assistant
If you’re a fan of office work, there’s no shame in that. In fact, your skills are in demand–virtually! With the massive growth of online business, there’s also an explosion of need for Virtual Assistants. I see posts looking to hire virtual assistants every single week in my Facebook groups…and I’m not even searching for that information!
Some virtual assistants provide customer service or check emails, but there are hundreds of services a virtual assistant can do. From video editing to proofreading and graphic design. Virtual Assistants can work remotely and start out earning $20-35 per hour.

Blogs need to keep putting new content out to the world to keep people engaged. But it can be hard to come up with the time and ideas. Plus, it’s nice to have a fresh perspective once in a while. So as a Freelance Writer, you could write blog posts in exchange for money. While a lot of sites will not pay for articles, there are hundreds that do.

If you start a blog at the beginning of your pregnancy, you could start to see regular income by the time baby is here.
You could be a Coach for anything you are passionate about and turn it into a way to consistently make more money. If you’re a good listener and people often come to you for advice, maybe becoming a life coach would be a good job for you. Here’s a story of a mom who started as a BeachBody Coach while on maternity leave.
I officially became an author on my second baby’s due date. It took me about 6 months to complete my book about how to wipe out debt fast, and I was 40-weeks pregnant when I hit publish.
P.S. I wish I had known how many times I was going to publicly share this picture. I had no intention of it when my husband took it. We just wanted to capture that incredible moment when I received my own book in the mail. I finally felt like a legit author! Had I known, I would have put makeup on or something…but that is the real me. T-shirt, yoga pants, and all.

If there’s a product line you absolutely love and are passionate about, check into becoming a distributor and selling those things to your friends, family, people in your community, or even online. Here’s a post I love with the Do’s and Don’ts of Direct Sales.

How Do You Make Money From Pinterest?
Thought Pinterest was just a great place for building your dream homes and finding your next DIY project? Think again.
While Pinterest is great for those things, it’s capable of so much more.
Pinterest is actually a powerful way to drive traffic (or get people to go) to websites, but most people don’t understand how it works. And if used in the right way, Pinterest can increase business and therefore, money earned.
There are two basic ways to earn money from Pinterest:
1. Getting traffic and email subscribers to your own blog
2. Manage Pinterest accounts for other people as a Virtual Assistant (VA)
You must learn how to do #1 (use Pinterest to direct traffic) and if you don’t have your own money-making blog, then you’ll also need to learn #2 and help others as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant. Thankfully, both are pretty easy.
If you work as a VA, your primary goal will be to send lots of new people (potential customers) to a business’s website. This could be an online business or even a bricks-and-mortar business. The business owner will love you for all the potential new customers to serve, and you’ll get paid for spending your time creating eye-catching images and finding awesome pins.
This is exactly how you could start a business and get paid to be on Pinterest as a VA.
What Does a Pinterest Virtual Assistant Do?
Whether you want to learn how to use Pinterest to drive traffic to your own website or to your client’s, you’ll do a variety of things on Pinterest, such as:
- Setting up Pinterest business accounts
- Designing pins
- Uploading pins
- Writing pin descriptions
- Scheduling pins
- Finding group boards to contribute to
- Looking at Pinterest data
- And of course, lots of pinning!
You might be wondering: Can’t anyone who knows how to use Pinterest manage a business Pinterest account? Don’t most businesses hire one person to manage a bunch of social media accounts?
If businesses really want results, they need someone managing their Pinterest account who understands not only how to use Pinterest, but how to use Pinterest for business.
And that’s what many general virtual assistants or social media managers are missing.
Why Is It Important to Specialize in Pinterest Skills?
Because Pinterest is not really a social media platform, like Facebook or Twitter.
Pinterest is really a search engine…like Google.
Think about it. You don’t go to Pinterest to socialize.
You go to Pinterest and you type into the search bar to find something specific. It might be “easy crockpot recipes,” or “how to save money.” You don’t go to Pinterest to start a discussion or comment on what someone ate for dinner. You usually go to Pinterest to find new ideas or inspiration. Pinterest is a search engine.
So managing someone’s Pinterest account and using it for business takes a unique set of skills. It’s different than your typical social media account, where the goal is to socialize. You have to understand how to get your pins to show up for relevant searches.
These skills are unique, but you can learn them rather easily and implement in just one month.
How do I know?
I did it. And it was actually much easier than I thought.
It wasn’t something I figured out on my own though. The way I use Pinterest for my personal use is very different than how I use it as a virtual assistant. I needed someone to teach me the ways of Pinterest for business, and I couldn’t have done it without taking a good course first.
How I Stumbled Upon Earning Money on Pinterest
When I decided to write a book and start a blog, I knew I had to get people to my website somehow.
Browsing Pinterest was a fun pastime for me. Before kids. And before deciding to stay at home with my kids plus starting an online business. There was simply no more time for browsing Pinterest.
But when I discovered that Pinterest could be a traffic generator, I knew that was the one for me. You mean I could spend more time on Pinterest as part of my business and working hours? And it would actually help me earn more money? Uh, yes, please!
I shared this discovery with one of my mentors and virtual assistant clients, and this awesome guy saw my passion and took a risk. He was going to let me create and manage a Pinterest account for his business. We agreed I could implement what I learned from a Pinterest course for his business as part of my virtual assistant responsibilities.
We both knew Pinterest could drive insane traffic. I loved Pinterest and he loves new traffic but didn’t get how Pinterest worked. Thus, we agreed I could implement what I learned from a Pinterest course for his business as part of my virtual assistant responsibilities.
I was stoked and dove right in. I took the course over a few days, created my to do’s, and got to work. It was clear this client wasn’t expecting a gigantic increase in traffic right away, but over the following 6 months or so, we were both hoping to see an increase in the number of visitors to his website.
Case Study: Making Money as a Pinterest VA
I did exactly what the course taught, and to both of our surprise, it only took one month before thousands of brand new people were going to his website.
After two months, more than 3,800 new people went to his website. He’d been active on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for over a year, yet within just a couple of months, 94% of his visitors that came from a “social media” source were coming from Pinterest.
By the third month, over 7,600 new people were going to his blog. It was incredible.
And the best part? All I did was what the course told me. It was as simple as following the steps.
My client was baffled and ecstatic. And so was I!
This wasn’t a fluke either. Pinterest is increasing traffic to websites of all different kinds of businesses, from authors to Side Hustle Nation, whose traffic increased 25x in just 60 days because of Pinterest.
With results like this, it’s no wonder businesses are specifically looking to hire Virtual Assistants who understand how to use Pinterest for a business. It’s kind of hard to turn away the potential of thousands of new customers every month.
How You Can Learn to Use Pinterest for Business
If you’re going to use Pinterest to increase traffic, grow an email list, and ultimately make money, it’s critical you know how to use Pinterest right. I never would have been able to bring thousands of new visitors to my client’s website each month had I used Pinterest the way I used it for my personal use.
There is a big difference in how to utilize Pinterest for personal use and for business.
To understand the difference, I took a course so I could learn step-by-step the ins and outs of Pinterest as a traffic-generating tool for businesses.
The course I took was Pinfinite Growth by Melyssa Griffin. I admit I had a little sticker shock at the price at first, but I watched her webinar and instantly knew this girl knew what she was talking about. She was making bank as a blogger and had tons of traffic coming to her blog via Pinterest. I liked her teaching style in the video too, so I knew it’d be a good course for me.
By spending the money on a course, and being on the tight budget I am, I knew it wouldn’t be one of those courses or books that I bought but would end up sitting there unread. If I was going to spend money like that, I was at least going to learn and use it to the best of my ability. Then when my client and I agreed I could start Pinterest for him, learning Pinterest became an immediate priority.
I was determined to prove that Pinterest really could increase his blog traffic, even though he was already getting 100,000 visitors per month.
And I don’t like to be wrong 🙂
The results? It worth totally worth it. The course was video-based and easy to follow. It included 8 modules. There were great examples and bonus materials. I went through it at my own pace (after my kiddo went to bed), and I have lifetime access to all updates she adds.
But the best part was that I was able to copy and implement what I learned and see incredible results within just one month.
Pinfinite Growth was a great course for teaching me everything I needed to know to use Pinterest for a business and increase traffic. There is also a private Facebook group which has been helpful, especially for the questions I had in the beginning. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know how to use Pinterest to increase website traffic.
But if you’re interested in just starting as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant, there’s a new course now that is geared toward you. So you have more options than I had.
How You Can Learn to Become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant
The new course I’m excited about is called Become a Pinterest VA Today.
It’s taught by Gina Horkey of Horkey Handbook and Kristin Larsen of Believe in a Budget. Both ladies have successful blogs and know the power of Pinterest for increasing traffic and growing email lists for online businesses.
Kristin started as a Pinterest VA years ago and had incredible success. (Gina even hired her to do Pinterest for her blog.)
Gina is awesome at teaching how to become a VA and even has a matchmaker service where VAs can find clients and clients can find VAs.
Both of these ladies are awesome individually, so I’m glad they teamed up to create a course specifically designed for anyone interested in starting as a Pinterest Virtual Assistant.
Have I taken this course yet? No, not yet. I haven’t because I’m already a VA and know how to use Pinterest for business, so, it’s not the ideal course for me right now. I’m sure I will in the future just for fun, and I’m sure I’ll learn something new, but right now 95% of my time is spent with my new baby and toddler at home.
However, I follow what these ladies do closely and only recommend their course because I genuinely believe it could be helpful for a lot of people who want to make money from home. It is also a less expensive alternative to Pinfinite Growth.
Which is the Best Course for Pinterest?
So which course is right for you?
If you have the time and money, take them both.
If you have to pick just one, here’s how I’d break it down:
Become a Pinterest VA Today is probably best for beginners in the Virtual Assistant world because the modules are more focused on what your role would be like, how to start your business, and how to find clients. These things are not included in Pinfinite Growth.
Pinfinite Growth is probably best for those who already have a solid understanding of the virtual assistant role and want to deep dive into how to use Pinterest to increase traffic to a website (yours or someone else’s).
Work Smarter, Not Harder
The moral of the story is you can earn money from Pinterest if you learn how to use it to send people to websites.
Learning to use Pinterest for business has unlimited potential because the steps can be replicated for so many different businesses.
You can use Pinterest to get more traffic and grow an email list through your own blog or you can become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant to help clients grow their businesses.
If you are looking for a way to make money from home, and you like Pinterest, this may be a perfect side hustle for you. Taking a course like Pinfinite Growth or Become a Pinterest VA Today will teach you the exact steps you need to follow to start using Pinterest like a boss.
Finding work you enjoy is worth the investment because it is something you’ll stick with. You can use your new Pinterest skills to help others and make money yourself. Now that’s working smarter, not harder.
Do something today that lets your light shine in the world.
Cheers to Common Cents & Your Success,
