We are a Christian homeschool family, and we love good books!
If your kids don’t like to read or be read to, I wonder if you just haven’t found great books yet?
Because there are so many wonderful books with wholesome content, inspiring stories, and meaningful lessons out there!

Together, our daughter (who is a passionate reader) and I curated this list of Great Christian Books for 9-12 year olds, which could be great independent reads or read alouds. Many of them are part of a series, making them extra exciting.
We hope you find a new book or ten for your family!
Light Keepers Sets: 10 Girls or 10 Boys

The Light Keepers books are inspiring true stories about great Christian boys or girls who grew up and positively impacted those around them. There’s a five-book set for girls and a five-book set for boys. Our daughter has read the girl books multiple times, and I plan to get the boys set when our son gets older as they are uplifting and thought-provoking books for Christian kids.

Moody Family Series by Sarah Maxwell

There are eight books in The Moody Family series, two for each season. These books are about the Moodys, a Christian homeschool family. We have read the first three books. I appreciate the wholesome content, how the family values working together, and how well they serve their neighbors.

Concord Cunningham: The Scripture Sleuth by Mat Halverson

This is a neat mystery series about Concord Cunningham, a boy who finds answers to mysteries by using scripture. Have a Bible handy so you can try to solve the mystery before reading the solution! We enjoyed the first book in this series as a read aloud. The kids looked up the Bible verses and brainstormed solutions. We plan to read the second one together this year. There are five books in this series.
- Concord Cunningham
- Concord Cunningham Returns
- Concord Cunningham on the Case
- Concord Cunningham Coast to Coast
- Concord Cunningham Pursues the Clues
Little Miriam of Galilee by Edith Martin
Little Miriam of Galilee is a story of a Jewish girl in Bible times who faces hardships with her family. This is one of our history storybooks we’re reading this year, and I appreciate how it gives insight into ancient Jewish life and God’s provision.
Fountain of Life by Rebecca Martin

Fountain of Life is our current history read aloud book, and I’m enjoying it so much that I’m reading ahead! It’s about Eli, a young Jewish man, who is torn between religious leaders who hated Jesus and people who heard of Jesus’ miracles and thought he was the Messiah. There don’t seem to be many copies of this book available, so grab a copy while you can if it interests you.
Christian Heroes: Then & Now

The Christian Heroes: Then & Now series records true, captivating stories of ordinary men and women who were used by God to do extraordinary deeds for his kingdom and his glory. These great Christian books include fascinating stories of people with strong faith in Christ in many different cultures and countries. There are MANY books in this series, so I’m not going to list them all!
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a captivating story with an even better message. This is another one of those Christian chapter books that you can plan to enjoy for many years, as children and adults both enjoy the stories by C.S. Lewis. (Note: There is a Christian Heroes Then & Now about C.S. Lewis, which I highly recommend!)
Little Pilgrim’s Big Journey by Tyler Van Halteren

John Bunyan’s classic Christian tale was adapted and beautifully illustrated into a 3-book series, called Little Pilgrim’s Big Journey, that both children and adults enjoy. We have all three and have read them multiple times. They have lovely, high-quality covers, so these are books you can plan to treasure for years. These are great for reading aloud or independent reading, and there are even coloring books and audiobook options on the publisher’s website.

Tales of the Kingdom by David and Karen Mains
Tales of the Kingdom is book one of a trilogy. It’s full of action-packed stories, allegories, virtues, and thought-provoking lessons. The description recommends it for ages 6 and up; however, if you have highly sensitive children, you may want to wait until they’re older to read it independently or read it aloud as a family. We look forward to checking out books two and three.
Badger Hills Farm Series by Jenny Phillips
The Badger Hills Farm is an exciting mystery series from The Good and the Beautiful that also incorporates faith and family. We have the first book, and our daughter is eager to read the rest. I have only found these on the publisher’s website.
- The Secret Door
- The Hidden Room
- Message on the Stamps
- Oak Tree Mystery
- Clue in the Chimney
- The Hills of Hirzel
Esther Starts from Home by Romaine Stauffer
Esther Starts From Home is another good Christian chapter book we found from Christian Light Publications. Captivating sweet stories and gentle humor sum up this book about a little girl named Esther.
Basil; Or Honesty and Industry by Charlotte O’Brien
Basil; Or Honesty and Industry, is a great little book about honesty and hard work. Children and adults alike will glean from this engagin story. This was our first book from Lamplighter Ministries, and we look forward to reading many more!
He Reigns Series by Laurie Salisbury

Reins of Love is book one in a seven-book series called He Reigns. This heartwarming series combines Christian virtues like forgiveness, faith, and kindness with the loving care of horses.
