We got chickens a couple of years ago and opened and closed the coop door manually for over a year. We went on vacation several times and hired someone to open and close the door. By the second summer, we decided it was time to invest in an automatic chicken door.
We read Amazon reviews and ended up purchasing two automatic chicken coop doors: Run-Chicken Door T50 and Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door. We installed both, as we had two different runs attached to one coop, and nearly a year later, decided to write this review to help people like you decide which automatic chicken coop door is better for you.

We’ll compare the two chicken doors:
- price
- ease of assembly
- ease of set-up
- reliability
- features

First, let’s look at the Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door Opener.
Omlet Automatic Chicken Coop Door Opener
Things to Consider
The Omlet door opens horizontally. This means the frame has a bigger footprint and needs more space. You can set up the door to open to the right or the left.
This Omlet chicken door has a control panel rather than an app for setting up the open and closing timing. There is a newer version now that has the capability to set it from a phone app.

Pros
The Omlet automatic chicken door opener is heavy-duty, which means it could last longer. It’s been almost a year at the time of writing, and both doors are holding up well and operating reliably.
Cons
The Omlet costs more and requires four AA batteries to operate (not included).
Also, the Omlet is more difficult to assemble. It came with many more parts and required much more time. It took my husband about one hour to assemble and install it.
- Operated by Light Sensor or Timer
- Powered by Batteries
- Built-in Safety Sensors
- Door Opens Sideways
- Reliable in all weather conditions
Next, let’s look at the Run Chicken Door T50. It comes in several solid colors, but we opted for the USA special shown below.
RUN-CHICKEN Door T50 Automatic Chicken Coop Door
Things to Consider
The Run Chicken coop door opens vertically. This means the frame has a smaller footprint and requires less space.
The Run Chicken door uses an app that is easy to use for setting up the open and closing timing.
Like the Omlet, the Run-Chicken has operated reliably for nearly a year in all kinds of weather.
My husband noted he had to remove the battery and put it back for it to work initially. Just pulling the tab didn’t work.

Pros
The Run-Chicken T50 automatic chicken door opener is easy to install and no assembly is required.
There’s also a video that shows how to install, use, and maintain the coop door.
The Run Chicken door only requires two AA batteries, which were included.
My husband says setting the timing was easier on the Run Chicken app versus the Omlet control panel.
It’s also the cheaper option of the two.
Cons
The only downside we see for the Run-Chicken T50 is that the door materials are moderate-duty rather than heavy-duty. We’ve had no issues with the materials and wouldn’t consider them weak or frail, but they’re not as thick and sturdy as the Omlet.
Battery Powered & Weatherproof Aluminum, Smart App & Timer Control, Predator Proof, Easy Install, Reliable All-Season Performance (USA)
